How does this calculator work?
Ice weight assumes the 2:1 ice to contents ratio most cooler makers recommend, so two thirds of the cooler is ice. Cubed ice packs at about 1.2 lb per quart of space; solid block ice is much denser, about 1.9 lb per quart, and melts more slowly because it has less surface area.
Ice life starts from a conservative baseline for each cooler type at a 90F high in shade, then scales with heat. Melting is driven by the difference between the outside air and 32F, so a 70F day melts ice at roughly two thirds the rate of a 90F day. Sun, frequent opening and a warm cooler at the start all shorten it.
These are estimates to plan ice runs by, not lab figures. Advertised "5-day" and "10-day" claims are measured in controlled conditions, and real campsites typically deliver 40 to 60 percent of them.

How long does ice last in a cooler when camping?
In a basic hard cooler, expect one to two days in summer heat. A 5-day or marine cooler kept in shade typically manages three to four days, and a rotomolded cooler packed at 2:1 with pre-chilling can reach five to seven. Sun, warm drinks going in and constant opening cut all of those figures sharply.
Should I drain the water from my cooler?
Usually no. Ice-cold meltwater still insulates the remaining ice, and draining it lets warmer air in. Drain only when water is reaching food packaging, or when you add fresh ice and need the room. Keeping meat in sealed containers above the water solves most of the problem.
Is block ice better than cubed ice?
Block ice lasts longer because it has far less surface area exposed to warm air, and it is roughly 1.9 lb per quart against about 1.2 lb for cubes. Cubes cool contents faster and fill gaps. A block or frozen water jugs on the bottom with cubes packed around the food gets the benefit of both.
