How does this calculator work?
The calculator starts from sleeping surface, because that is what actually fills a tent floor. A standard adult pad is about 25 x 75 inches (13 sq ft), a cot is about 30 x 80 inches with its legs (17 sq ft), and a queen air mattress is 60 x 80 inches, or about 16.7 sq ft per sleeper. Kids on youth pads take about 8 sq ft.
Sleeping surface is then multiplied by 1.6 for the floor you need to move, dress, reach the door and store shoes without climbing over someone. Duffels add 3 sq ft per person and a dog adds 6 to 16 sq ft depending on size.
Finally the area is divided by 16 sq ft, which is roughly what manufacturers allow per rated person. The Coleman Sundome 4-person is 9 x 7 ft (63 sq ft) and the Kodiak Canvas 10 x 10 is sold as a 6-person tent (100 sq ft). That gap between rating and comfort is why the usual advice is to size up by two.

What size tent do I need for a family of 4?
A family of four on sleeping pads fits a 6-person tent comfortably, which usually means 90 to 110 sq ft of floor such as 10 x 10 ft. A 4-person tent is about 60 to 70 sq ft and only works if everyone sleeps shoulder to shoulder with gear left in the car. If the adults use a queen air mattress or cots, step up to an 8-person tent.
Is a 4-person tent really big enough for 4 people?
Technically yes, practically rarely. A 4-person rating means four standard pads laid edge to edge with no gaps, which is roughly 63 sq ft on a 9 x 7 ft floor. Adults need room for elbows, bags and getting to the door at night, so most car campers treat a 4-person tent as a 2-adult tent, or 2 adults plus one small child.
How much tent space does a dog need?
Plan about 6 sq ft for a small dog, 10 for a medium dog and 16 for a large breed that sprawls. That is enough for a dog bed at the foot of the pads. A large dog in a family tent often pushes the rating up by one size, so a family of four with a Lab usually lands on an 8-person tent.
Do I need a tent I can stand up in?
Not for sleeping, but it matters more for car camping than people expect: dressing, changing kids and waiting out rain are all easier standing. Dome tents often peak around 4 ft 6 in to 5 ft at the center, while instant cabin and canvas tents reach 6 to 7 ft. A peak of about 6 ft 4 in lets most adults stand.
