How does this calculator work?
The list is built in the order you actually pack a car: shelter and sleep first because they are bulky and non-negotiable, then kitchen, cooler and water, then furniture, light and small essentials.
Fuel is counted at roughly one 1 lb cylinder per day plus a spare, which matches typical two-burner use. Water without a spigot is planned at 1.5 gallons per person per day, covering drinking, cooking and washing.

What should I pack for car camping for the first time?
Pack a tent with stakes and a footprint, a sleeping bag and pad for each person, a two-burner stove with fuel, a cooler with ice, water, a headlamp each, chairs, a lantern, a first aid kit and trash bags. That core covers most first trips. Borrow before you buy the extras: you will learn quickly which ones you miss.
What do people forget most when camping?
The usual casualties are a lighter, tent stakes, spare fuel, a can opener, trash bags, headlamps and pillows. Rain gear is forgotten on sunny forecasts and then needed. Keeping a packed kitchen bin and a small essentials bin between trips removes most of the risk.
